The Redskins completed a comeback from a 24-0 deficit against the Bucs today, marking the biggest comeback win in team history. While the big plays, like the onside kick the Redskins recovered to lock up momentum in the second half and the winning TD pass from Kirk Cousins to Jordan Reed, will get all of the attention on the highlights shows there were some little things that made this comeback possible.
—Bashaud Breeland made the biggest little play of the day when he streaked over from the opposite side of the field and dragged Bucs RB Doug Martin down to save what would have been a game-clinching touchdown with 4:10 left to play. “That shows what kind of guy he is,” said Jay Gruden. “I talk about Breeland being an ultimate competitor. If he takes that one play off . . . they go up by 10, the game’s over most likely.”
—That made the comeback possible. What brought into the realm of the probable was an 18-yard pass that Cousins floated to Jamison Crowder to set up first and goal at the six. Cousins likely does not get that pass off against a blitzing Bucs defense if Matt Jones doesn’t execute a block to give Cousins some time. “When I looked (at the defense), I knew they were going to blitz me, so I was ready for it,” Jones told reporters.
—Personal foul penalties aren’t little things since the cost 15 yards. But the Bucs helped the Redskins out by committing four post-whistle penalties plus three roughing the passer fouls. They helped keep drives alive and got the Redskins into favorable field position a few times.
—The Redskins preserved their timeouts, choosing to burn only one between Martin’s run down to the field and the Connor Barth field goal that put the Redskins down by six. Since they had not needed to squander any earlier in the game they went into that final drive with two timeouts and the two-minute warning to stop the clock. Gruden only had to use one of them but having them in his pocket he knew that the whole playbook was available and that Cousins could throw anywhere on the field. Options are good things to have when you’re trying to finish off that last little bit of a miracle comeback.
