Redskins quarterback Colt McCoy seemed to be disappointed about not being named the winner of a competition for the starting job that none of the players involved seemed to know was going on.
“I'm just kind of keeping my reaction to myself,” he said when asked what the thought when he heard that Kirk Cousins had moved up to the top of the depth chart ahead of Robert Griffin III. “I just want to show up every day, put a smile on my face, and be the best version of myself I can be. We've got a great team here, the guys in the locker room are awesome and at the same time I respect my coaches. I'm just going to continue to be who I am, work as hard as I can.”
Just last November, the shoe was on the other foot. Jay Gruden had decided to bench Griffin. He gave the job to McCoy, not Cousins.
This year Griffin was named the starter early in the offseason and McCoy and Cousins were supposedly competing for the backup job. But that changed quickly when Griffin was ruled out of Saturday’s third preseason game with a concussion and Cousins played well in his place. Suddenly Griffin was demoted, Cousins was moved up, and nobody is sure where McCoy stands.
“I just come to work, man, do the best I can,” said McCoy. “That's kind of how I approach every day. Lots of things going on the last couple of day. But to be honest my focus is on knowing that I've got to play the whole game against Jacksonville just kind of watching tape on them and figuring out how we can go out there and play well.”
Gruden confirmed that McCoy will go the distance in the fourth preseason game. The starters will rest, so that means Cousins won’t play. Griffin will not be cleared through the concussion protocol by then so that leaves McCoy to play from beginning to end.
“I play with the guys who are out there, hopefully move the ball down the field and finish the preseason on a high note,” said McCoy.
Although McCoy may not be happy now, it seems likely that he will get his chance at some point. The Redskins have not had a quarterback start 16 games in the season since 2009 and with the team in full blown rebuilding mode there is a good chance that it won’t happen again this year.
