Another definition of a moral victory in the NFL is a loss.
That is what the Redskins experienced last night.
They went toe-to-toe with the best the NFL has to offer on the road and they were tied with less than a minute left to play.
On a couple of occasions it looked like they might implode. But they recovered and fought on. That’s the “moral victory” part.
The loss leaves the Redskins at 2-2, in second place in the NFC East, tied with the Cowboys and a game behind the 3-1 Eagles.
That’s not a bad place to be, especially considering that they may get a chance to pull even with the Eagles in three weeks, after their bye and a home game against the 49ers.
That Eagles game will be very similar to last night. It will be on the road on a Monday night in a hostile environment. The memory of the “moral victory” from last night could help them get through the tough spots they are bound to encounter in the course of that game.
And their experience in Arrowhead could help them down the road in places like Seattle or New Orleans or during a difficult game at home.

Of course, it would have been better for them to learn those lessons while they were in the processes of racking up an actual win and not while putting up a good effort in a moral victory.
They have to clean up the penalties, the issues with communication and perhaps plan for a few different situational play calls (how about just going for the first down with a minute left instead of a win or tie pass?).
The NFL is a week-to-week proposition. But for four weeks now the Redskins have played well. They lost the opener to the Eagles while committing four turnovers. They could have won if they had only turned it over three times. They then went on the road and handed the Rams their only loss so far and convincingly beat the Raiders before playing the Chiefs down to the wire.
Don’t worry, I’m not recommending that you make Super Bowl plans. But this is shaping up to be a very entertaining season for the Redskins.
