Here is what you need to know on this Wednesday, October 15, four days before the Washington Redskins play the Tennessee Titans at FedEx Field.
Five early thoughts Redskins vs. Titans
—Once again, the Redskins’ upcoming opponent has a quarterback controversy. Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt said on Monday that he didn’t know if Jake Locker, who has been dealing with a thumb injury, will be ready to play on Sunday. If he can’t go, 32-year-old career backup Charlie Whitehurst, who has started just six NFL games in six years in the NFL, will get the nod for the second straight game.
—The Titans don’t have a workhorse running back but if you add together the yardage gained by Shonn Greene (44 carries for 190 yards) and Bishop Sankey (50/211), you’d have a top 10 rusher in the NFL. Locker is a threat to run, too, with 107 yards on the season.
—The pressure is clearly on the Redskins, who are at home and favored by five. There aren’t many teams that 1-5 Washington “should” beat but the 2-5 Titans, who two weeks ago blew the biggest lead a home team has ever blown in a 29-28 loss to the Browns, qualify as one. Their only win since the season opener was a two-point victory over the winless Jaguars. Jacksonville, of course, represents the Redskins’ only win.
—One thing that could derail the Redskins’ bid for a home win is the interception bug. No NFL quarterback this season has thrown more picks than Kirk Cousins, who has eight. The Titans, with ball hawks Michael Griffin and Jason McCourty having two interceptions each, are tied for fifth in the NFL with seven picks.
—The full prediction comes later in the week but I’m going on record now saying that this will be the week that Alfred Morris gets his 20 carry, 100-yard game. They will have to keep the ball on the ground due to the interception factor noted above. The Tennessee rushing defense isn’t awful, 11th in the NFL giving up 4.0 yards per attempt. But Morris can probably squeeze another yard or two out of each carry and help the Redskins control the game.
—Today’s schedule: Kirk Cousins news conference 11:05; Open locker room player availability 11:15; Practice 1:00; Jay Gruden news conference after practice (approx. 3:00)
—Days until: Titans @ Redskins 4; Monday night Redskins @ Cowboys 12; Redskins @ Vikings 18
