Here is what you need to know on this Monday, November 10, six days before the Washington Redskins host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at FedEx Field.
Nickel coverage: Five things the Redskins need to work on this week
The Redskins get back from their bye today with what amounts to an extra practice session in Ashburn. It won’t be anything too strenuous but they can get to work on some things they need to get done this week.
—Robert Griffin III will get all of the work with the first-team offense. He needs to continue to work on getting rid of the ball quickly and on getting in synch with his receivers.
—We have heard all year that the issues in the running game are not anything systematic or due to a weak personnel link. It’s a breakdown here, a missed backside block there, an occasional bad read by the runner. If they are ever going to get those issues cleaned up, now is the time.
—The Redskins got 10 sacks against the Jaguars and five in Dallas; in their other seven games they have a total of eight. The outside linebackers have been working in coach Brian Baker’s pass rush drills, complete with dummy QB’s and rush lanes painted on the grass, since OTAs. They need to redraw the lines or fill them with more pass rushers.
—Yesterday Ryan Clark went on ESPN to refute last week’s ESPN report that Griffin had “alienated” the locker room. DeSean Jackson was on the FOX pregame shows to say that there was some division in the locker room over whether Griffin or Colt McCoy should have started against the Vikings. It’s up to Jay Gruden to work a plan to get the locker room buttoned up and get the team to keep its business behind closed doors.
—They will need to make a roster move to make room to reinstate Barry Cofield off of the short-term injured reserve list. There are seven wide receivers on the roster now that Leonard Hankerson was added from the PUP list so one of them could go. At this point in the season nine offensive linemen may not be a necessity so a change could be made there as well.
—Today’s schedule: Practice 10:30; Open locker room and Jay Gruden news conference after practice (approx. 12:00)
—Days until: Bucs @ Redskins 6; Redskins @ 49ers 13; Redskins @ Colts 20
