Here is what you need to know on this Friday, November 21, two days before the Washington Redskins travel to San Francisco to play the 49ers.
Thursday Redskins Park news and notes
—Morgan Moses, who will start on Sunday unless Trent Williams has a miraculous recovery from a knee injury, has been pretty laid back this week, not nervous at all about the likelihood that he will face former defensive player of the year linebacker Aldon Smith. In fact, Jay Gruden sounds a little nervous because Moses isn’t a little more nervous. “I think he will be ready for it,” said Gruden. “He is a very calm kid, he’s very laid back. Hopefully he gets up a little bit more; he is going to have to. It’s going to be a great challenge for him whoever comes off that side.”
—I think the Redskins’ best bet to beat that defense is to spread them out. Linebacker Chris Borland, a rookie out of Wisconsin, is a terror against the run but in college he struggled against spread formations in general and in coverage specifically. It will the tough to run if the front seven is kept in tight quarters with two-tight end sets or with a fullback in the game.
—Gruden said this about inserting younger players into the lineup: “For us to take a starter out and put a young guy in, the young guy has to earn the spot,” he said. “That’s No. 1. We’re not going to just do that. This isn’t D-League, trying to develop players.” If you want to know when Young Player X is going to play, just read that. They won’t put him in there to “see what he can do.” That’s what practice is for.
—While Robert Griffin III has been struggling in the passing game since he returned to the lineup, Alfred Morris has had his two best rushing games of the season. He had 19 carries for 92 yards against the Vikings and 20 for 96 vs. the Bucs. Morris is currently seventh in the NFL in rushing with 701 yards and he is on pace to gain 1,100 yards on the season.
—Today’s schedule: Practice 11:10; Jay Gruden news conference and open locker room after practice (approx. 1:00)
—Days until: Redskins @ 49ers 2; Redskins @ Colts 9; Rams @ Redskins 16
