Here is what you need to know on this Friday, November 14, two days before the Washington Redskins host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at FedEx Field.
Five Redskins thoughts and observations
—Turnovers are the talk of Redskins Park this week. Jay Gruden said Wednesday and again on Thursday that they are emphasizing both sides of the turnover equation during practice. The team has just three interceptions on the season so seeing what they can do to improve that would be a good place to start.
—And while Kirk Cousins made a lot of nice plays in the five and a half games that he played behind center he was a turnover machine. If you take his nine interceptions and two lost fumbles out of the equation the Redskins would be a plus-two in turnover ratio instead of minus-nine.
—Some of the turnover problem is just bad luck. The Redskins have put the ball on the ground 11 times and the have lost six, 55 percent of them. The other team has fumbled 13 times and has lost only five, 38 percent.
—Some of that is a matter of luck evening out. In 2012 the Redskins lose just six of 26 fumbles (23 percent), and recovered 10 of 17 opponents fumbles (59 percent). Over the long run, fumbles are a 50-50 proposition
—Nobody outside of the locker room really knows what the popularity rating of Robert Griffin III is. In fact, there are probably a lot of guys in there who don’t really know. Like a lot of us, they assume that everybody feels the same way about him as they do. But the bottom line is that it doesn’t really matter. If the team wins with him behind center, he’s fine. If they lose, he’s not.
—Today’s schedule: Practice 11:10; Open locker room and Jay Gruden news conference after practice (approx. 12:30)
—Days until: Bucs @ Redskins 2; Redskins @ 49ers 9; Redskins @ Colts 16
