Thursday injury report
Notes and quotes from around Redskins Park
—My man J.P. Finlay broke the story that DeSean Jackson will be out on Sunday. They decided it’s better to let him get another week of rest on his injured shoulder. It is likely that Ryan Grant will start in Jackson’s place and Rashad Ross will be active and likely will get a few snaps.
—It’s also possible that we will see Jamison Crowder lined up outside instead in his usual slot position. Jay Gruden said that the team’s thinking on where he is capable of playing has evolved since they drafted him in 2015. “I think when we first got him we saw him as an inside slot receiver and a punt returner, quite frankly,” said Gruden. “But really when he got here and the more you get around him and the more you see he’s versatile – he can play outside without a doubt. I think he’s got that ability and he’s shown that he plays a lot bigger than he is.”
—Despite having a broken thumb, starting strong safety Will Blackmon is not an injury concern. He will play wearing a cast to protect the thumb. Blackmon assured me that he could catch ball despite the cast. The injury, which also included a dislocation of the thumb, happened during the London game and Blackmon had surgery to insert two pins into the thumb the day after they got back. Blackmon said that if there had been a game last Sunday instead of the bye that he likely would not have been able to play. But he will be in there on Sunday.
—I’m not the only one concerned about the lack of impact plays from Preston Smith. Joe Barry did say, correctly, that Smith has made quarterbacks uncomfortable. He is second on the team with five QB hits and third with 12 hurries. Still, Barry wants more. “We want sacks, as does Preston,” he said.
—Rob Kelley is the Redskins’ new starting running back. He is going to make sure he remembers that he has had to work for what he has. “Yeah, coming from being undrafted, it's always something you have to sit back and think about to bring yourself back down to earth,” he said. “I'm happy with how far I came.”
—Kelley is not going to worry how many snaps and carries he gets. “If they need me I'll go, if they don't I'll sit back and encourage the other guys,” he said. “I don't really try to do their job for them I let them do their job.”
