Here is what you need to know on this Sunday, November 30, seven days before the Washington Redskins play the St. Louis Rams at FedEx Field.
Three and out: Final thoughts on Redskins vs. Colts
1. The Redskins downgraded cornerback E. J. Biggers to out of today’s game with a concussion. That was not a surprise since he had not practiced all week. But with Tracy Porter on injured reserve Biggers’ absence does leave the Redskins a bit thin at cornerback. David Amerson and Bashaud Breeland will start and the nickel spot will be held down by some combination of safety Trenton Robinson and lightly experienced corners Greg Ducre and Chase Minnifield.
2. It’s not like the Colts will have to make any adjustments to their game plan to try to exploit the situation. They line up with three wide receivers about half of the time with T. Y. Hilton, Reggie Wayne, and Hakeem Nicks. With Andrew Luck pulling the trigger the patchwork backfield will be severely challenged.
3. The best way to protect a shaky secondary is to get a good pass rush. Luck has been sacked just 20 times. The Indy offensive line is not loaded with top draft picks. They start a rookie free agent at center, a rookie second-round pick at left guard, a 2013 third-round pick at right guard, veteran free agent pickup Gosder Cherilus at right tackle and 2011 first-rounder Anthony Castonzo at left tackle. They provide protection that is sometimes spotty but Luck is so good at getting rid of the ball they rarely pay for it.
Out: Redskins coach Jay Gruden had an interesting observation about Colt McCoy’s last start. “Early in the Dallas game, Monday Night Football, the first couple of drives, he was a little shaky,” said Gruden. “His heart was beating a little too fast.” McCoy had just 112 yards passing, an interception, and a 67 passer rating at halftime against the Cowboys and the Redskins had just three points on the board. The Redskins can’t count on Luck and company letting them stay in the game if McCoy gets off to a slow start again.
