Former Redskins cornerback Shawn Springs, who also works as an analyst for CSN Mid-Atlantic, appeared on The Junkies Tuesday morning. When asked about Josh Norman, Springs gave a qualified endorsement.
Springs argued that Norman earned his five-year, $75 million contract from Washington after playing in a great defense in Carolina, calling him a "system guy."
"He's not a guy that you say, 'I want you to go out there and lock this guy down'," Springs said. But when asked to elaborate on Norman's weaknesses, Springs insisted that's not what he meant.
"I don't think it's a big weakness. I think he's just an all-around, solid guy," the retired corner said. "I don't think he's freakshow like, say, Patrick Peterson. I think he's just a good player."
Springs then wondered aloud how Norman compared to other Redskins corners who got big contracts. Names that came up included Deion Sanders, Darrell Green, Champ Bailey and Springs himself.
"[Norman is] not a cover... Well, he is. He does a lot of good things well. The guy is a hard worker," the 1998 Pro Bowler said.
"You remember like Ronde Barber? He does a lot of things well. Ronde wasn't the fastest guy, he doesn't have lightning speed, but he's going to be in great position all the time. He's going to punch the ball out, he's going to pick the ball off, he's going to get a sack, and therefore Ronde is a Hall of Famer.
"I think Josh Norman is the same way. He's not going to overwhelm you like he's going to out there to check Julio Jones, match up with him one-on-one all day and chase him around. But he will punch the ball out. He will play his side ... he just plays solid."
