The torn Achilles’ tendon suffered by Junior Galette on Wednesday is just the latest blow to a Redskins’ team that had already lost four players over the previous two weeks to season-ending injuries. In case you needed a refresher, here’s a roundup of the injuries and how they affect the depth chart:
- Outside linebacker
Who’s hurt: Galette (ruptured left Achilles).
Who’s left: Ryan Kerrigan, Trent Murphy, Preston Smith, Jackson Jeffcoat, Houston Bates, Sage Harold and Dyshawn Davis.
What it means: The Redskins actually have some depth at this position after investing second round picks here the past two drafts (Murphy and Smith). So it’s next man up. Galette's injury likely means an increased role for those two. The Redskins kept four outside linebackers last season.
- Tight end
Who’s hurt: Niles Paul (fractured and dislocated left ankle) and Logan Paulsen (turf toe on right foot).
Who’s left: Jordan Reed, Derek Carrier, Je’Ron Hamm, Chase Dixon, Devin Mahina, D.J. Williams and Ernst Brun, Jr.
What it means: The Redskins will now have to rely on the oft-injured Reed and an inexperienced Carrier, who just arrived via trade and is still learning the playbook. The team kept three tight ends last season.
- Inside linebacker
Who’s hurt: Adam Hayward (torn ACL, right knee).
Who’s left: Keenan Robinson, Perry Riley Jr., Will Compton, Terrance Plummer, Martrell Spaight and Alonzo Highsmith.
What it means: The biggest impact of losing Hayward will be on special teams, where he served as captain and recorded 11 tackles on coverage teams in 11 games last season. It could, however, open the door for both Plummer and Spaight to make the 53. The Redskins kept five inside linebackers in 2014.
- Running back
Who’s hurt: Silas Redd (torn ACL, MCL).
Who’s left: Alfred Morris, Matt Jones, Chris Thompson, Trey Williams and Mack Brown.
What it means: I’m not sure Redd was a lock to make the 53-man after the arrival of Jones and offseason emergence of Thompson, but he wasn't going to make it an easy decision. Redd also made five tackles on special teams last season. The Redskins kept three tailbacks last season.
