The Redskins had their chances to put some distance between themselves and the Dolphins early and some chances to draw even late. But they couldn't take advantage of them and ended up losing to Miami 17-10.
Here is a look at those lost opportunities and what went wrong.
First quarter, first and 10 at the Miami 26: The Redskins had pounded the ball downfield, picking up 30 yards on five Alfred Morris carries on first down. But from the 26, Kirk Cousins went back to pass and was sacked for a loss of eight. That stalled the drive and Kai Forbath came on to kick a 45-yard field goal.
First quarter, third and three at the Miami 29: An off-tackle run by Chris Thompson gained only two yards. The Redskins lined up like they were going to go for it on fourth and one but they called timeout. Forbath missed a 46-yard field goal attempt wide right. The Redskins lead held at 3-0.
Third quarter, first and 10 at the Miami 40: With the Redskins leading 10-7, rookie Preston Smith sacked Ryan Tannehill and stripped the ball away. After a wild scramble that saw two Miami offensive linemen have chances to recover the fumble, Smith ended up pouncing on it at the Dolphins 40. But Morris lost two yards on a first-down run and Cousins threw incomplete twice. The Redskins punted.
Third quarter, second and four at the Miami 22: A parade of penalties scuttled this chance. First it was a delay of game on Washington. Then Jordan Reed was called for offensive pass interference. Finally Ty Nsekhe, filling in for a few plays for an injured Morgan Moses, was flagged for holding. The Redskins ended up punting on third and 18 at the 36.
Fourth quarter, first and 10 at the Miami 26: By now the Redskins were trailing 17-10 with eight minutes left and trying to answer a 69-yard touchdown punt return by Jarvis Landy. First Cousins threw a lateral towards Andre Roberts that went out of bounds for a loss of three. On third and 13, Cousins threw the ball up inside the five, hoping that Pierre Garçon could make a play on it. But Dolphins cornerback Brice McCain made the play instead, a leaping interception just before falling out of bounds at the two.
Fourth quarter, first and 10 at the Miami 23: On their last chance to tie the game, Morris lost a yard on first down. Reed gained four on a pass to the flat and Cousins threw incomplete for Chris Thompson. Miami brought the heat on fourth down. Cousins was knocked down just before trying to hit Reed over the middle. But the pass was off target and Miami took over on downs.
