The Redskins have hired Dr. Robin West as Director of Sports Medicine, the team announced in the press release Wednesday. She becomes the NFL's first female head physician.
West, a sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon, also serves two other major roles in the Washington medical community. She is the Medical Director of Inova Sports Medicine and the Lead Team Physician for the Nationals.
Earlier in her career, Dr. West worked as a physician for the Pittsburgh Steelers, University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University.
Redskins President Bruce Allen spoke about the hiring prior to introducing Dr. West to the media.
“We are continually committed to providing our players with the best possible health care and it starts with finding the finest physicians available,” Allen said. “Dr. West’s unique experience dealing with professional and amateur athletes makes her expertise extremely rare and we are glad to add her to our team.”
Of the opportunity, Dr. West expressed her commitment to providing players quick, easy access to the most qualified medical specialists available.
“I’m excited to be to joining the Redskins’ medical team and helping to provide the highest quality medical care, where we focus to improve performance, decrease injuries and provide immediate access to an elite group of medical specialists,” she said.
She also asserted her belief in the game's safety.
"I think with all the rules changes and the implementation of the concussion protocols that football is the safest it's ever been."
