Who will make the Redskins' 53-man roster?
The preseason is over, and the players have written their resumes. It’s time for the Redskins to sit down and make the tough decisions. They have until Saturday at 4 p.m. to do so.
Starter: Kirk Cousins
Backup: Colt McCoy, Nate Sudfeld
There was an easy tell here. If they wanted to try to sneak Sudfeld onto the practice squad they would not have had him play the whole game against the Bucs last night. Sudfeld didn’t shine but he didn’t have to.
Offensive line (8)
Starters: LT Trent Williams, LG Shawn Lauvao, C Kory Lichtensteiger, RG Brandon Scherff, RT Morgan Moses
Backups: OT Ty Nsekhe, G Spencer Long. G Arie Kouandjio
Changes: Bryan Stork out
In the end Stork did want to come here but the Redskins didn’t pass him on his physical. Eight on the O-line is on the thin side and they might look for a veteran tackle and/or center. The latter could put Kouandjio’s spot in jeopardy.
Wide receiver (6)
Starters: Pierre Garçon, DeSean Jackson, Jamison Crowder (slot)
Reserves: Josh Doctson, Ryan Grant, Rashad Ross
As of this writing Doctson is still on the PUP list. He’ll be off of it by Saturday at 4 and on the active roster. The top draft pick could be inactive the first few games but he should be ready to contribute by the time the meat of the schedule cranks up.
Tight end (4)
Starter: Jordan Reed
Reserves: Niles Paul, Vernon Davis, Logan Paulsen
Change: Added Paulsen
If they do go with the eight-man offensive line Paulsen will be a good addition as he is a solid blocker. If they add someone on either the O-line or at running back Paulsen could be the odd man out.
Running back (3)
Starter: Matt Jones
Reserves: Chris Thompson, Robert Kelley
Change: Added Kelley, removed Keith Marshall
Yes, I went the entire offseason picking Marshall to miss making the 53, taking numerous barbs on Twitter and in the comments. I figured he’d have a good enough showing against the Bills to earn a spot but instead he got hurt and is on the shelf for the year. They could be on the lookout for a fourth back to add to the roster given Jones’ propensity to get injured and Kelley’s inexperience. Or maybe they will go with youth over experience and just keep Mack Brown, who was impressive against the Bucs.
Defensive line (7)
Starters: Chris Baker, Kedric Golston, Kendall Reyes
Reserves: Matt Ioannidis, Cullen Jenkins, Ricky Jean Francois, Ziggy Hood
Changes: Stephen Paea out, Jenkins on
I was very close to having Paea out on the last projection but I figured the $3.75 million in dead cap that would be created by letting him go would be a deterrent to cutting him. It wasn’t. I’m a little hesitant on Ioannidis being in as he hasn’t done much in either practice or in the preseason. If his status as a fifth-round pick doesn’t protect him, Anthony Lanier could get a spot or they could go with six on the D-line.
Outside linebacker (4)
Starters: Ryan Kerrigan, Preston Smith
Reserves: Houston Bates, Trent Murphy
Houston Bates doesn’t do much exciting but a fourth OLB usually doesn’t. He can play special teams pretty well so that’s a plus. Willie Jefferson was thought to be a challenger here but he didn’t survive the first round of cuts.
Inside linebacker (5)
Starters: Mason Foster, Will Compton
Reserves: Martrell Spaight, Terence Garvin, Su’a Cravens
I had Perry Riley out on my last projection. I think they saw him as a potentially useful player but not at a $4 million salary. Garvin may not be quite as good as a backup at the Moe linebacker spot but he’s good enough and he plays special teams well, making him a bargain at $750,000.
Starters: Josh Norman, Bashaud Breeland
Reserves: Kendall Fuller, Quinton Dunbar, Dashaun Phillips, Greg Toler
This seems to be settled as far as the roster goes. The question will turn to who will be inactive Week 1. All six can’t dress. Right now I’m going with Fuller but that could change.
Starters: DeAngelo Hall, David Bruton
Reserves: Will Blackmon, Duke Ihenacho
One player who could crash the party is Deshazor Everett, who excels on special teams. I don’t think his spot would come at the expense of any of these safeties but someone else could be out.
Specialists (3): LS Nick Sundberg, P Tress Way, PK Dustin Hopkins
This has been set in stone all year.
