49ers to pick 12th in draft for first time in franchise history

John Lynch

The 49ers are one of the most storied NFL franchises, so it's not often that they find themselves in a spot they've never been. And yet that's exactly where they'll be heading into the 2021 NFL Draft.

San Francisco's 2020 season ended Sunday with a 26-23 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, dropping the 49ers' record to 6-10. Consequently, they'll have the No. 12 overall pick in the 2021 draft. Throughout the 75-year history of the franchise, they've never had the 12th pick.

So, assuming the 49ers stick at their current draft position, they'll break new ground. They'll be in position to land one of the top defensive prospects in the draft, and even could have a chance at one of the premier quarterbacks.

Just in the last seven drafts, some big names have been picked 12th overall, including Cleveland Browns receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. Surely, the 49ers hope whomever they end up selecting can make a similar impact.
