The 49ers made the 37 necessary moves Friday and Saturday to arrive at their initial 53-man roster by the NFL-mandated deadline.
The 49ers struggled with their final few roster moves, and on a conference call with Bay Area reporters, 49ers general manager John Lynch even lobbied the NFL to increase roster sizes.
“I would urge our league in the world we’re living in, where there’s things such as concussion protocols and things that are more apt to pull people off the field, at some point we got to adjust these numbers,” Lynch said. “Whether it’s in terms of the 53 players you’re allowed or at least allowing more to be active on game days.”

While each team has a 53-player roster limit, only 46 players are allowed to suit up for games. The 49ers open the season next Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
