Aiyuk activated off COVID list in series of 49ers moves

Reinforcements are on the way.

On Wednesday the 49ers activated Brandon Aiyuk, D.J. Jones and Jordan Willis from the Reserve/COVID-19 list. All three players are now eligible to practice starting Thursday and are able to play against the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.

The team also opened the practice window for Mark Nzeocha to return from injured reserve. The linebacker has not played since suffering a quadriceps injury in Week 3 in the team’s win over the New York Giants.

After the 49ers placed cornerbacks Jamar Taylor and Ken Webster on IR Tuesday, the team added depth to their secondary promoting Kai Nacua to the active 53-man roster from the practice squad. The safety has spent time with the Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts since his time with the Cleveland Browns, but has not played in a game since 2017.

It has been a tumultuous season for the 49ers who have lost countless players to season-ending injuries and had many others miss games while on short term IR or on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Coach Kyle Shanahan does not anticipate the practice windows for Jimmy Garoppolo and George Kittle to open in the next few weeks. He remains pleased with how Nick Mullens has played and hopes the quarterback will improve with one of his playmakers returning this week in Aiyuk.
