49ers activate center Weston Richburg off PUP list before regular season

SANTA CLARA – 4ers center Weston Richburg was removed Monday from the physically unable to perform list, signaling he will be ready to play at or near the beginning of the regular season.

Richburg, who underwent extensive knee and quadriceps surgery early in the offseason, did not participate in the offseason program or training camp.

It is possible he could see some action in the 49ers’ final preseason game on Thursday against the Los Angeles Chargers. He is projected to be the 49ers’ starting center.

The 49ers also saw the return of tight end George Kittle, who sat out the past two weeks of practice with a calf injury.

Kittle is not expected to play Thursday, as the 49ers hope to ensure he is ready for the regular-season opener on Sept. 8 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
