SANTA CLARA — The 49ers' defensive line has been hit by injuries to its top edge rushers. However, neither injury seems to be that serious at the moment.
On Tuesday, the team announced that Nick Bosa is week-to-week after an MRI revealed a muscle strain and Dee Ford is day-to-day with calf irritation.
Originally Bosa complained about leg soreness. Unconcerned, the staff gave him a maintenance day off. Two days later, when the soreness was worse without practicing, the reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year underwent an MRI which revealed the strain.
“He was about to go out and practice through it because he didn’t think it was much,” Shanahan said. “Fortunately, he got that and we were able to prevent him from hurting it worse.”
Ford felt irritation in his calf a few days ago but went through warm-ups on Sunday. It felt too tight for him to continue.
As with Bosa, Shanahan said the team did not want to risk further injury and have now has listed Ford as day-to-day.
