49ers-Buccaneers injury report: Joshua Garnett underwent thumb surgery

SANTA CLARA -- Backup offensive guard Joshua Garnett, a former first-round draft pick, had thumb surgery over the bye week, but the 49ers don't intend to place him on season-ending injured reserve.

“He had a tendon repaired over the break,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday. “Just need to give it a couple more days to heal up.”

The 49ers expect linebacker Reuben Foster to return to action this week. He was limited in practice Wednesday. Foster missed the two games before the bye with a hamstring injury.

Wide receiver Pierre Garçon and Garnett are less certain to be available against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Garçon did not practice Wednesday, and he has missed two of the past three games with a knee injury. He is second on the team, behind tight end George Kittle, with 24 catches for 286 yards and one touchdown.

Garnett is a third-year pro from Stanford whom then-49ers general manager Trent Baalke selected at No. 28 in the 2016 draft. He was in competition during training camp for the starting job at right guard. But Garnett missed most of the preseason with a knee injury, opening the door for veteran Mike Person as the starter.

Garnett entered the season opener against the Minnesota Vikings when Person sustained a foot injury. But Garnett played just 14 snaps before sustaining a dislocated toe. He has served as a backup for the past three games.
