SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers closed out their second week of training camp with a shorter, non-padded practice.
Kyle Shanahan, who returned early in the morning from John Lynch’s Hall Of Fame celebration in Canton, Ohio, was worried the session would be less crisp. Especially after a day in front of fans and an impending day off.
“I was worried we were going to have a bad practice watching people being tired, but I was pleasantly surprised,” Shanahan said. “Those guys didn’t take a practice off. They didn’t change stuff with the pads off. They went hard.”
Jimmy Garoppolo finished the day completing 10 of his 13 attempts, including a deep ball down the right sideline to Deebo Samuel that resulted in a touchdown. The wideout beat the double coverage of Dre Greenlaw and Talanoa Hufanga.
Trey Lance completed eight of his 12 attempts, including a 25-yard pass to George Kittle, who was able to free himself from the clutches of Marcell Harris. Two of Lance’s incompletions were drops by Josh Hokit and Richie James Jr.
Here are other notes and observations from the 49ers' 10th practice of training camp:
-- Several players were given vet days off including Kyle Juszczyk, Jimmy Ward and Jason Verrett, who left camp to be with his wife who was being induced.
-- Arik Armstead (groin), Samson Ebukam (soreness) and Nick Bosa (maintenance day) did not practice. Javon Kinlaw returned to participate in team drills.
-- Azeez Al-Shaair was seen on the side field with trainers during practice. Shanahan shared that the linebacker’s recovery from a knee sprain is going much better than they originally thought.
-- There was another exchange issue between Garoppolo and Alex Mack, who continued to wear a towel tucked into the back of his pants. Shanahan explained this is not new for the veteran center.
“He works hard out there and has a little bit of a sweating issue,” Shanahan said with a little chuckle. “And we need like a beach towel. The quarterbacks are working through that. And honestly, it happens with almost all centers.
“Maybe Mack is a little worse than others, but no, I mean, Matt Ryan used to make him change his pants like every period. It doesn't stay dry too long. It’s part of football.”
-- George Kittle had another standout day in 1-on-1s, getting separation on his routes from Tavon Wilson, who was on coverage. The All-Pro tight end shared that it was a focus during the offseason and Shanahan has noticed an improvement.
“I saw it today,” Shanahan said. “Yeah. We've been challenging George. George works as hard as anyone there is. And I thought today was his best day of route running.”
-- Eddie Yarbrough had another impressive practice, getting a sack/pressure of Lance twice in team drills.
-- Talanoa Hufanga was on the field for a few first-team reps filling in for Jimmie Ward, who took a vet day off.
-- Tony Jefferson picked off a pass thrown by Josh Rosen that was intended for Trent Sherfield.
-- Lance and JaMycal Hasty fumbled a handoff again today. Shanahan insisted both players share the blame.
“It's both of them,” Shanahan said. “That’s why we’ve got to keep repping it. I mean, that's the hard thing about it. That's why, I mean, when you just dabble in that stuff, you're going to get turnovers. And our D-line has seen it a bunch, so they're trying to play it right and there's just some give and take between both of them.
“But yeah, if you're going to fumble the ball, we can't do it. So we’ve just got to keep repping that. It's going to take some time.”
-- Rosen completed two of his three attempts. His third was intercepted by Jefferson. Nate Sudfeld connected on four of his six attempts, although one of Kevin White’s receptions was knocked loose by B.W. Webb.
-- Players have the day off on Monday and return for Practice No. 11 on Tuesday.
