SANTA CLARA – Cornerback Dontae Johnson, who has been working with the 49ers’ first-team defense during training camp, is out indefinitely after being diagnosed with a concussion.

Johnson will not be available for the 49ers’ exhibition opener on Friday night at the Kansas City Chiefs. He has been placed in the NFL concussion protocol.

Rookie inside linebacker Donavin Newsom is “doing fine” on Wednesday morning, the 49ers reported, after he was taken off the practice field Tuesday by ambulance due to concerns over an injury to his neck and head.

Newsom sustained a concussion. He did not suffer any cervical spine fractures, the club said. The 49ers expect Newsom to be released from Stanford Hospital on Thursday afternoon.
