49ers informed Pierre Garçon of possible trade before NFL deadline

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The 49ers have kept wide receiver Pierre Garçon in the loop about the possibility of a trade that could end his stay with the organization.

“We’ve looked into everything,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said after Sunday's 18-15 last-minute loss to the Arizona Cardinals. “Teams have talked about it. It is a possibility, but nothing is for sure right now.”

Garçon didn't make the trip to Arizona with his teammates because of knee and shoulder issues. Shanahan said he expects Garçon to be available to play Thursday night against the Raiders.

But it remains to be seen whether Garçon still will be a 49er past the NFL trade deadline, which is Tuesday at 1 p.m. PT. Any team that acquires Garçon would pick up the remainder of his $6.625 million contract for this season, as well as his non-guaranteed $5.65 million salary for 2019.

"He’s one of the guys that people have asked about and we have talked about, but nothing is going down right now," Shanahan said. "We’ll see how these next two days play out with Pierre and a lot of people.”

Defensive back Jimmie Ward also has received some interest in trade talks, Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer reported. Ward, a first-round draft pick in 2014, is playing this season on the fifth-year option of $8.526 million. He isn't under contract for the 2019 season.

Ward said nobody with the 49ers has spoken to him about the possibility of a trade.

“I haven’t heard anything,” Ward said when reporters asked about his name reportedly emerging in trade talks. “This is first time hearing it, actually.”

Ward started Sunday at free safety in place of injured Adrian Colbert after playing cornerback since the offseason. Last year, Ward opened the season as the starting free safety before sustaining a season-ending injury.

When asked if he views the remainder of the season as an opportunity to solidify himself with the 49ers as a free safety, Ward answered, “Yeah, if I don’t get traded by Tuesday.”
