Wide receiver Deebo Samuel will not be available for the 49ers in the season opener, scheduled for Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals at Levi’s Stadium.

Although Samuel was activated off the non-football injury list on Saturday to open the season on the 49ers’ 53-man roster, he did not practice this week.

Rookie receiver Brandon Aiyuk (hamstring) and center Ben Garland (ankle) are listed as questionable. Both saw limited practice on Friday.

Cornerback Jason Verrett (hamstring) also was listed as out for Sunday's game.

Running back Tevin Coleman did not practice Friday due to the air quality, but he was not listed on the team's injury report.

Samuel sustained a fractured left foot during a player-organized workout in Nashville in June. He underwent surgery to repair the Jones fracture.

Kendrick Bourne likely opens the season as the 49ers’ top receiver. Dante Pettis could see a significant role, along with slot receiver Trent Taylor. Richie James is the sixth receiver on the 49er’' 53-man roster.

The 49ers also could promote recently signed veteran wide receiver Kevin White from the practice squad for Sunday’s game.

Samuel is expected to be the 49ers’ No. 1 receiver this season, so his absence for the season opener is significant.

As a rookie in 2019, he caught 57 passes for 802 yards and three touchdowns while also gaining 159 yards and three rushing touchdowns on 14 attempts.

Aiyuk, whom the 49ers chose with the No. 25 overall pick in the draft, got off to a strong start in training camp before sustaining a hamstring strain on Aug. 23. He returned to limited practice on Thursday.

The 49ers could have a dilemma at center, where Garland has not taken part in a full practice since Aug. 17. He sustained an ankle injury in practice the following day. He returned to practice on a limited basis this week.

Starter Weston Richburg is out for at least the first six games as he continues to rehab from a knee injury that ended his 2019 season in December. He opens the season on the physically unable to perform list.

The 49ers could promote veteran Hroniss Grasu from the practice squad to take a spot in the starting lineup for Sunday’s game. The 49ers signed Grasu to a one-year contract on Aug. 20.
