Jimmy G explains decision-making, missing open receivers vs. Colts

After one of his most inconsistent performances with the 49ers, Jimmy Garoppolo detailed his decision-making process Sunday against the Colts

As usual, there were throws the veteran quarterback would like to have back after watching the film. There were other drives where Garoppolo felt that he got into a good rhythm. While Sunday’s loss did happen in monsoon-like conditions, the quarterback could have avoided some of his mistakes.

Garoppolo finished the day completing fewer than 60 percent of his attempts, with one passing touchdown and two interceptions.

“If you miss someone, obviously, you wish you'd see the whole field,” Garoppolo said Wednesday. “You're like, I wish I had that one back. But yeah, it's kind of coverage dictated. Each play is different, but coverage dictated -- man, zone, whatever it is. And you’ve just got to go through your process as a quarterback.

“If your read’s on the left side, on the right side, you’ve got to go through that. And yeah, you would love to have some back and see the entire field, you'd love to. But that’s part of playing the position. You’ve just got to see everything.”

Garoppolo even went into detail regarding the play near the end of the fourth quarter where he threw a short pass to Deebo Samuel that was wrestled away by Colts cornerback Xavier Rhodes. At the same time, Mohamed Sanu was running uncovered down the middle of the field uncovered.

At that point, it was a one-score game, with the 49ers only trailing by five points. The interception seemingly closed the door on a potential comeback for Garoppolo and the 49ers. The veteran play-caller explained why he thought the one-on-one matchup Samuel faced was the best option.

“They were in a one-high defense,” Garoppolo said. “So yeah, like even that one, Mohamed should've been taken away by the free safety, he was just making a ... doing whatever he wants type of play. But yeah, I had one-on-one with Deebo. I wish I threw it a little further on his back shoulder. Just hung inside a little bit.”
