Shanahan non-committal on Jimmy G starting Week 8 vs. Bears

SANTA CLARA -- After an inconsistent performance from Jimmy Garoppolo on Sunday night, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan would not guarantee the veteran quarterback would start in Week 8 against Chicago Bears.

In the 49ers' 30-18 loss to the Indianapolis Colts at a soggy Levi's Stadium, Garoppolo completed 16 of his 27 attempts for 181 yards, threw one touchdown and two interceptions. While inclement weather played a role in his underwhelming production, Shanahan was vague with his answers about next week.

“I would guess so,” Shanahan said when asked if Garoppolo would start. “I will watch this tape and see if guys are healthy, first of all, and know where our guys are at. It was good for Jimmy to get healthy enough to play in this game today.”

Trey Lance, who missed the entire week of practice leading up to Sunday's game with a knee sprain, might not be healthy enough to play when the club travels to Chicago to face off with the Bears. If the rookie is able to practice in the next few days, Shanahan left the door open that there is a possibility for him to play at Soldier Field.

Still, Shanahan did not throw Garoppolo under the bus, clarifying that there have been small mistakes in the execution of his offense that has caused it to sputter at times.

“I didn’t think there were a ton of bad decisions,” Shanahan said. “Just missed some throws and obviously the ball got away from him a few times.”

What Shanahan does not plan to do is overhaul his offense. While the Nov. 2 NFL trade deadline looming, the coach seems to believe the answer to the team’s woes is not making extreme changes to the lineup.

"I think we have changed personnel a lot each week in these four games,” Shanahan said. “I’m not going to do something drastic right now, I’ll go evaluate the tape and hopefully we will get a couple more guys back this week.

“We will look at what gives us the best chance and evaluate the guys this week and go off of that.”
