Lynch says 49ers open to re-signing cornerback Verrett

INDIANAPOLIS -- After playing at a high level for 13 games of the 2020 season, Jason Verrett earned his way into the 49ers’ plans last year as the team's top cornerback.

Verrett’s season came to a heart-breaking conclusion in the fourth quarter of the 49ers’ season opener in Detroit when he sustained a torn ACL in his right knee.

Currently, Emmanuel Moseley and Ambry Thomas are in line for the 49ers' starting cornerback jobs. But the 49ers have not closed the door on bringing back Verrett, who is scheduled for unrestricted free agency.

“We are keeping it open,” 49ers general manager John Lynch said Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine.

“That position, you can’t have enough of them, and Jason is a really good one, when healthy. His problem has been staying healthy.”

Verrett has started more than four games in only two of his eight NFL seasons due to a long list of severe injuries he sustained since breaking into the professional ranks as a first-round draft pick of the Chargers in 2014.

“J.V., his emotions are real and they’re strong,” Lynch said. “So when he’s playing great, you feel it. The lows are low. He’s had so many injuries, he gets devastated when these things happen and it doesn’t seem fair, so he’s been through a lot.”

The 49ers continue to monitor the progress Verrett is making in his physical therapy.

“We're interested to see -- we hear, talking to him, and talking to his agent, he really has a want to get back and so we’ll monitor that closely and see where he’s at,” Lynch said. “We’ll see if that’s a possibility.”
