The 49ers on Thursday promoted cornerback Greg Mabin from the practice squad and signed rookie cornerback Tarvarus McFadden to take his place.

Mabin (6-foot-2, 200 pounds) spent the first eight weeks of the regular season on the 49ers’ 53-man roster before his demotion last week, as the team cleared roster spots for linebacker Dekoda Watson and safety Marcell Harris.

Two spots opened up last week due to season-ending injuries to running back Raheem Mostert and cornerback Emmanuel Moseley. The 49ers re-signed quarterback Tom Savage to fill the first opening.

The 49ers are likely to make another roster move before the team returns to action Monday night against the New York Giants. The 49ers could promote running back Jeff Wilson or Matthew Dayes to the active roster.

McFadden (6-2, 205) rejoins the 49ers after originally signing with the club as an undrafted rookie. After the 49ers waived him, McFadden spent two weeks on the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad.
