SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers on Wednesday officially promoted linebacker Pita Taumoepenu from the practice squad.

Taumoepenu, a sixth-round pick of the 49ers in the 2017 draft, takes the roster spot that opened with linebacker Dekoda Watson going on injured reserve with a calf injury. Earlier Wednesday, coach Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers were "leaning toward" placing Taumoepenu on the active roster.

Taumoepenu appeared in two games for the 49ers as a rookie. He spent the first 12 games this season on the practice squad. He recorded nine sacks in 12 games as a senior at Utah.

In addition to the earlier announced signing of long snapper Colin Holba to replace suspended Kyle Nelson, the 49ers signed safety Terrell Williams to the practice squad.
