Undrafted rookie running back JaMycal Hasty looked the part during training camp, but he landed just short of winning a spot on the 49ers' roster heading into Week 1.

But Hasty did not have to wait too long to receive his promotion from the practice squad.

Hasty on Saturday was elevated to the 49ers' roster and will suit up for the 49ers' Week 3 game against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. He will serve as the team's No. 3 running back on Sunday behind Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson.

"Hasty had a great camp, caught peoples' eyes very quick," said Nick Mullens, who will start at quarterback in place of injured Jimmy Garoppolo.

The 49ers on Saturday promoted OL Hroniss Grasu to the active roster from the team's practice squad. They also activated Hasty and linebacker Joe Walker from the practice squad.

The 49ers officially placed running back Tevin Coleman on injured reserve to make room for Hasty on the roster. Coleman, who is expected to miss a month with a knee sprain, must spend at least three games on injured reserve before he is eligible to return to action.

Running back Raheem Mostert, the team's leading rusher, also will not be available for Sunday's game due to the knee injury he sustained in the first half of the 49ers' 31-13 victory over the New York Jets in Week 2. Mostert is not expected to miss much time with his injury.

Hasty will wear No. 38.

After being unable to play the past two seasons due to a knee injury and complications from the surgery, McKinnon has gotten off to a good start this season. McKinnon has 101 yards and a touchdown on six rushing attempts, while catching three passes for 20 yards and a touchdown.

Wilson has been a reliable fill-in for the 49ers. He has appeared in 18 regular-season games with 95 rushing attempts for 374 yards and four touchdowns. Wilson has also has caught 15 passes for 132 yards, including a game-winning touchdown in the final minute against the Arizona Cardinals last season at Levi's Stadium.

Hasty (5-foot-8, 205 pounds) redshirted as a freshman at Baylor, and ended up playing 45 games in his career. He rushed for 1,998 yards and seven touchdowns with a 5.2-yard-per-carry average.

Hasty also is a receiving threat out of the backfield. He caught 79 passes for 485 yards and one touchdown in college. The 49ers could mix him into the action on third downs because of his ability to beat man coverage against linebackers.

Grasu, whom the 49ers signed as a free agent on Aug. 20, will be in uniform for the third time in three games. He was elevated from the practice squad for the first two games and started at center in the opener while Ben Garland was out with an ankle injury.

Walker appeared in 42 games with 14 starts in four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and Arizona Cardinals. After the 49ers released him at the beginning of the season, he signed to the team’s practice squad. Walker will serve as a backup with Dre Greenlaw out with a leg injury.
