SANTA CLARA  — The 49ers have promoted running Matthew Dayes to the active roster and have waived defensive back Tyvis Powell heading into their Monday night game facing the New York Giants.

A source confirmed to NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco earlier on Monday that Dayes would be added to the active roster.

Dayes will be the team’s third running back behind Matt Breida and Alfred Morris. Jeff Wilson was the other candidate from the practice squad available to be promoted.

When the team lost running back Raheem Mostert to a season-ending injury, they also lost a valuable special teams contributor. Dayes provides some support in that area.

Dayes (5-foot-9, 205 pounds) returned 18 kickoffs for 437 yards in his rookie season with the Browns. He appeared in 16 games, carried five times for 13 yards and caught four passes for 29 yards last season.

Dayes was a seventh-round draft pick of the Browns last year from North Carolina State, where he rushed for 1,166 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior.
