The 49ers rounded out their 90-man training camp roster Saturday, signing undrafted defensive lineman Jordan Thompson to a one-year contract.

Thompson broke out as a senior at Northwestern last season, posting career highs in tackles (30), tackles for loss (6.0) and sacks (3.0). Pro Football Focus rated Thompson as the second-best interior defensive lineman in the Big Ten Conference last year, and the best against the run.

Thompson signed with the Indianapolis Colts in May, but he was waived later that month.

He likely faces an uphill climb to earn a 53-man roster spot with the 49ers at the end of training camp, considering former first-round picks Arik Armstead and Solomon Thomas likely will get the bulk of the reps lining up with defensive tackle DeForest Buckner. Linemen D.J. Jones and Sheldon Day played in 10 and 12 games last season, respectively, while 2018 pick Kentavius Street was able to practice with the team in December after tearing his ACL during his pro day.

If Thompson is going to earn a spot, Saturday was his first day to make an impression. The 49ers conducted their first training-camp practice, two weeks before they host the Dallas Cowboys at Levi's Stadium in their preseason opener.
