49ers-Seahawks inactives: Young defensive players can prove themselves

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers head into Sunday's game with a similar lineup as in last week's win over the Denver Broncos.

Nickel back K'Waun Williams will miss the game against the Seattle Seahawks at Levi's Stadium with a knee injury. His absence in a second consecutive game will open the door for rookie D.J. Reed to play another significant role in a game in which the 49ers likely will have five defensive backs in the game for most of the day against Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.

Matt Breida is active, but the staff likely will keep the running back on a pitch count in relation to how his ankle feels during warmups and throughout the game. Rookie Jeff Wilson’s performance over the past two weeks gives 49ers coaches no reason to push Breida any more than necessary. The team deactivated veteran Alfred Morris, so Matthew Dayes will be the No. 3 running back.

Marquise Goodwin is active, but 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan has been wanting to get rookie wide receiver Dante Pettis more playing time. Goodwin could be worked in slowly again, as he was last week, but the team needs to stretch the field against the Seahawks, and using him could be a way to gain an advantage.

Jaquiski Tartt will be out for his second game in a row and his sixth of the season. Marcell Harris will resume his spot at strong safety and try to help slow down the Seahawks' run game. He had a rough first game but did redeem himself in his second game against the Broncos.

Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny is out, so Harris will try to stop Chris Carson and former 49ers running back Mike Davis.
