The injury-riddled 49ers need help at running back.

On Monday, Kyle Shanahan brought in a group of running backs to work out with starter Matt Breida looking doubtful for Monday night's game. And one day later, the team signed Matthew Dayes to the practice squad in a series of roster moves.

Dayes was drafted in the seventh-round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Brows. As a rookie, he didn't register any carries, but he did have 18 kickoff returns for 437 yards, averaging 24.3 yards per return.

Breida suffered a mid-ankle sprain in the 49ers' loss to the Cardinals Sunday, a source confirmed to Matt Maiocco.

“It’s better news than anticipated, but it’s still not great news,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said. “We’ll see the next couple of days.”

Alfred Morris is the only other true running back on the roster. No. 3 running back Raheem Mostert is used primarily on special teams.
