It all comes down to Week 18 for the 49ers.
Their ticket to the postseason might be punched before they take the field on Sunday if the Atlanta Falcons manage to defeat the New Orleans Saints. If the Saints win (New Orleans opens as 4.5-point favorites), the 49ers will have to beat the favored Los Angeles Rams on the road in order to secure a playoff spot.
The 12-4 Rams will be looking to capture an NFC West division title, and they’ll likely need a win to do so with the 11-5 Arizona Cardinals hosting the 6-10 Seattle Seahawks.
That could put pressure on the 49ers, who will have either a veteran quarterback playing with an injured thumb or a rookie quarterback playing in a playoff-like atmosphere. Trey Lance started in place of the injured Jimmy Garoppolo on Sunday, earning his first career victory as a starter in the 49ers’ 23-7 win over the Houston Texans. But Kyle Shanahan said after the game that Garoppolo remains the team’s starting quarterback and will return to the lineup in the regular-season finale if he is healthy enough to play.
