49ers waive seven players to prepare for undrafted free-agent signings

With an eight-player draft class and more undrafted rookies set to be signed this week, the 49ers on Monday waived seven players to clear the way.

The 49ers announced the following cuts from their 90-man offseason roster:

WR Steven Dunbar Jr.
DB Godwin Igwebuike
CB Tarvarus McFadden
LB James Onwualu
WR Jordan Smallwood
P Justin Vogel
S Terrell Williams Jr.

Vogel was with the club since March 19, as the 49ers signed him as a potential replacement for Bradley Pinion, who signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent.

But when the 49ers invested a fourth-round draft pick on Utah punter Mitch Wishnowsky, it became apparent that Vogel did not fit into the 49ers’ plan. Vogel appeared in all 16 games with the Green Bay Packers as a rookie in 2017. He was named as a Pro Bowl alternate after averaging 44.4 yards per punt, with an outstanding net average of 41.6 yards.

But the Packers cut Vogel last year after picking JK Scott in the fifth round. Vogel did not appear in any NFL games last season.
