The 49ers’ roster stands at 88 after the club on Wednesday waived/injured wide receiver Max McCaffrey.

McCaffrey, 24, underwent surgery on his left foot earlier this week after being sidelined for the 49ers’ first three preseason games with the injury. If he clears waivers, he will revert to the 49ers’ injured reserve list.

The 49ers play their exhibition finale on Thursday night. The league-wide deadline for teams to trim their rosters to the regular-season limit of 53 players is Saturday, 1 p.m.

The 49ers originally signed McCaffrey to a two-year contract in mid-December. He was inactive for the 49ers’ final three games of last season. He appeared in five games last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, catching one pass for 4 yards.

McCaffrey is the son of former NFL receiver Ed McCaffrey. His younger brother is Carolina running back Christian McCaffrey.
