Aiyuk leaves 49ers practice early with hamstring injury

NBC Sports

SANTA CLARA -- Rookie wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk clearly established himself among the top – if not the top – wide receiver on the field during the first week of 49ers camp.

But Aiyuk’s status for the short term now is tenuous due to a hamstring injury he sustained during practice on Sunday morning. The 49ers did not immediately provide an update on Aiyuk's status.

One play after catching one of his many passes from 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, Aiyuk was running a deep route down the right sideline when he pulled up and grabbed at his left hamstring.

Aiyuk and Kendrick Bourne have established themselves as the top wide receivers with Trent Taylor consistently playing in the slot. The 49ers hope to have Deebo Samuel back for the regular-season opener after he underwent surgery in June to repair a Jones fracture.

Aiyuk, whom the 49ers selected with the No. 25 overall pick from Arizona State, has shown an ability to line up in a number of the team’s receiver spots. He is also competing for a role on special teams on kickoff and punt returns.
