Smith deals Steelers first loss, continues amazing comeback

They're going to make a movie about Alex Smith one day.

The former 49ers quarterback's career was put into serious doubt when he sustained a gruesome broken leg in Week 11 of the 2018 season. The damage was so bad, there was concern he might lose the leg entirely. But after nearly two years of rehab, Smith made his inspirational return to the Washington Football Team in Week 5 earlier this season, and got his first win in Week 11.

He already was basically guaranteed to win the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year award. And after leading Washington to an upset win over the previously undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, that might not be enough recognition.

Smith completed 31 of his 46 pass attempts for 296 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in the 23-17 win over the Steelers. With the victory, Washington (5-7) kept pace with the New York Giants atop the NFC East.

He has gone through many ups and downs since entering the league with the 49ers as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, with Monday's win representing the most recent climax. The plot will come full circle next week when the 49ers take on Washington in Arizona.

Like I said, made for a movie.
