Arik Armstead attended Pleasant Grove High School in Elk Grove, California. Yahoo! Rivals labeled him as a four-star recruit and the 61st best player in the 2012 class. He was selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Game after his high-school career.

Armstead played in 13 games his freshman season and ranked fourth in the team in tackles among non-starters. In his sophomore campaign, he recorded his first career sack and logged 40 or more snaps in five of his 13 games. Armstead stood out on the defensive line in his final year at Oregon. The 6-foot-7 defensive end recorded 5.5 tackles for loss in the 13 games he started for the Ducks. He also had a career-high nine tackles and recovered a fumble in the National Championship against Ohio State. Armstead finished the season second among interior lineman with 46 tackles.
