Former 49ers DB George Maderos passes away at 83

Former San Francisco 49ers defensive back George Maderos passed away on Thursday, February 2nd at the age of 83. 

Maderos was originally selected by the 49ers in the 21st round (250th overall) of the 1955 NFL Draft. He spent two season with San Francisco (1955-56), appearing in 20 games and registering four interceptions and one fumble recovery.

A native of Chico, CA, Maderos attended California State University-Chico where he competed in football, basketball, boxing and track and field while lettering 14 times, more than any other athlete in the school’s history. In 1969, Maderos was selected as Chico’s Player of the Century for football.

Following his time with the 49ers, Maderos served as the head coach at Chico State for football, boxing and track during a 38-year teaching career at the school. He would later become a charter member of both the Chico State Athletics Hall of Fame and Chico Sports Hall of Fame. In 1973, Maderos was selected as one of six members for the inaugural class of the Chico Sports Hall of Fame.
