The 49ers locked down the fifth spot on their offensive line Sunday by agreeing to terms with guard Mike Person on a three-year contract extension, a league source told NBC Sports Bay Area.

The team confirmed the deal on Monday.

"Aside from his toughness and durability, he brings tremendous versatility," 49ers GM John Lynch said. "Mike is exactly the type of person and competitor we look for, and we are very happy to have gotten this extension done."

Person, who was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent, received $9 million with $3 million guaranteed in the contract, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch both expressed last week during the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis that they would like Person to remain with the team. They both have hope that Joshua Garnett could develop and reach his potential but recognize his history with injuries.

Right guard was the only starting position on the offensive line that remained in question as the team headed into the 2019 offseason. The group includes right tackle Mike McGlinchey, center Weston Richburg, left guard Laken Tomlinson and veteran left tackle Joe Staley.

Person’s second season with the 49ers will be his seventh in the league. He started all 16 games in 2018 after having spent time in Seattle, St. Louis, Atlanta and Indianapolis.

“Person is a free agent, and we’d love to have him back,” Shanahan said. “But we have a lot of directions to go, so hopefully we will get him back. I was really happy with what Mike did for us this year, and we will see how this goes up to March 13. It’d be awesome for him not to get there, but you know how I feel.”

“I became a big admirer of Mike Person,” Lynch said. “There’s a big thing for showing up in this league in terms of being dependable. You don’t fault guys, it’s hard, injuries happen. A guy like Jimmie Ward has the heart of a lion. It’s just been unfortunate injuries. Mike Person battled through some stuff last year, but he kept showing up so that earns respect.”
