Alex Smith's amazing comeback has been completed, as the Washington Football Team quarterback entered Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams, and he very well could remain the starter against the 49ers come December.
Smith, who played seven seasons with the 49ers, entered Sunday as Washington's No. 2 QB against the Rams with Kyle Allen named the starter and former first-round draft pick Dwayne Haskins dealing with an illness.

Allen left Sunday's game in the second quarter after taking a hit to the helmet by Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Reportedly the hope in Washington is that Smith will be able to assume the role of starter once again. While Haskins recently was demoted from starter to No. 3 on the depth chart, CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reported Sunday that Washington wants Smith, the top pick by the 49ers in the 2005 NFL Draft, to be the starter in the coming weeks.
La Canfora also reported multiple sources within the organization told him a Haskins trade by the end of October is likely to happen.
If that is to be true, Smith's chances of overtaking Allen as Washington's starting QB only will increase. And he very well could be entrenched as the starter by Week 14 when Smith comes to Santa Clara to play the 49ers. It would be a storybook chapter to his journey in seeing Smith play against his former team again.
Smith, 36, already has defied the odds by being able to play football at all. He sustained a career-threatening and life-threatening leg injury during the 2018 season. Smith had multiple complications from 17 surgeries and had to battle sepsis as well.

Before his injury, Smith was coming off back-to-back Pro Bowl seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. Smith was injured during his first season with Washington. He signed a four-year, $94 million contract with Washington in March 2018.
Smith has had a long, winding career with the 49ers, Chiefs and Washington. Watching him start as a QB in the NFL again would be one of the greatest comeback stories in football history.
