How Jed York, Jimmy Garoppolo brighten day for 49ers fans from Ohio

Chris Logan of Hudson, Ohio, has traveled with his sons, Elijah and Grant, to 49ers road games each of the past five seasons.

In Week 2, they made the 240-mile trip to Cincinnati and saw the 49ers win for the first time in person. But that was not all that made the trip special.

“For the last several years we have had the great fortune to get tickets close to the 49ers bench and we always come early,” Hudson wrote in an email to NBC Sports Bay Area. “Every year, Jed (York) has been on the sidelines and signed our jerseys. It became a tradition for us.”

On Sept. 15, the boys called out to the 49ers’ CEO before the 49ers-Bengals game, and York again came over to greet them.

“They handed him their jerseys and I jokingly said, ‘You can sign under your signature from the last few years.’” Chris Logan said. “When he looked, sure enough, there was his signature in triplicate and no others. He looked at me and my sons and said, ‘You don’t want my signature every year, why don’t we get you some real signatures?’”

York then motioned for some 49ers staff members to come over. The jerseys were folded, bagged and placed in a sideline equipment locker, and the Logan family provided their home address.

“Every day my sons came home from school and checked the front porch, and Saturday, there it was,” their father said. “I heard the yells of excitement from upstairs and barely made it down to hear the tape being cut and the box being torn.

“There were our jerseys, with a few slightly faded Jed York signatures and right in the center -- Jimmy Garoppolo, No. 10!”

Chris Logan has been a 49ers fan since Jan. 10, 1982. He was six years old and watched “The Catch” with his dad and grandfather. He said he was hooked from that moment. His sons are also building their own 49ers memories.

Logan said his son wore his “Jimmy jersey” to bed and the 49ers also took sole possession of first place in the NFC West over the weekend.

“I know Mr. York didn't have to do what he did, but it’s something they will never forget,” Logan said.
