SANTA CLARA -- Safety Jimmie Ward could be back in action this week for the 49ers on Monday night against the Los Angeles Rams.

Ward, who sat out the 49ers' Week 9 game against the Arizona Cardinals due to a quadriceps strain, was not scheduled to practice Thursday but he appears close to returning to action.

"We're hoping he gets to practice tomorrow," 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said on Thursday. "He just can't today."

The 49ers are not expecting third receiver Mohamed Sanu to be available for a period of time due to a knee injury.

Jauan Jennings, Travis Benjamin and Trent Sherfield are the candidates to see action in place of Sanu, when the 49ers return to action Monday night.

The 49ers are not likely to open the practice window for linebacker Dre Greenlaw this week, Shanahan said. Greenlaw was placed on injured reserve heading into Week 2 after undergoing core-muscle surgery.
