Jimmy G back at 49ers practice, looks accurate in drills

SANTA CLARA -- For the third day in a row, Jimmy Garoppolo took part in 49ers practice, going through his usual warm-up routine.

The veteran quarterback had a light wrapping of black tape around his throwing thumb that appeared similar to what was seen on the same hand on Wednesday.

Garoppolo went through team calisthenics and then moved on to throw several passes to George Kittle and the training staff. The quarterback began with shorter passes and gradually worked up to longer passes that were approximately in the 40-yard range.

On Wednesday, Garoppolo described throwing as very painful but did not let that appear to affect his throws which were accurate through the first 20 minutes of practice that was open to media.

Kittle, who always has been very supportive of his quarterback, complimented Garoppolo's zip on one of the passes.

Sunday’s matchup with the Rams has huge playoff implications for the 49ers. If the team can notch a sixth consecutive win over their division rival, they will clinch a playoff berth for the fist time since their Super Bowl run in 2019.

If they lose in Los Angeles, the 49ers’ fate will rest in the hands of Kyle Shanahan’s former employer, the Atlanta Falcons. An Atlanta victory over the New Orleans Saints would secure a wild card spot for Garoppolo and his team.

Shanahan already has reported that he will not name the 49ers' starting quarterback prior to Sunday’s kickoff in Los Angeles, but with Garoppolo looking like his usual self on both Wednesday and Thursday, the odds are in favor of the veteran being under center for the final contest of the regular season.
