Jimmy G had PFF's highest QB grade in Week 2 before injury

As he hobbled through the first half of the 49ers' 31-13 Week 2 win over the New York Jets, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo nearly had a flawless performance on the field.

Garoppolo completed 14 of his 16 pass attempts for 131 yards, two touchdowns and didn't turn the ball over. He had a 140.4 passer rating and a 99.6 (out of 100) in ESPN's QB rating. Garoppolo also set a career-high 90.2 grade from Pro Football Focus, which was the highest of any quarterback Sunday.

This all came in one half, too. Garoppolo sustained a high ankle sprain and didn't return for the second half. He likely will not suit up for Week 3 against the New York Giants.

Nick Mullens replaced Garoppolo, and there was a significant dropoff. Mullens did complete 8 of his 11 pass attempts for 71 yards but failed to reach the end zone. He was intercepted once and sacked twice. His passer rating was just 51.7 and his QBR was a lowly 2.3.

The 49ers believe in Mullens and he appears in line to start against the Giants. As Garoppolo rehabs, the 49ers have to be happy with how their franchise QB looked before injuring his ankle. There were plenty of questions surrounding Garoppolo after San Francisco's Week 1 loss, and he certainly silenced some critics.
