Jimmy G ‘looking like' 49ers' starter this week, Shanahan says

Jimmy Garoppolo is on pace to return to the 49ers' starting lineup on Sunday, coach Kyle Shanahan said on Friday morning.

"It's looking like that's going to be the case," Shanahan said on KNBR's "Murph & Mac Show."

"(But) if he comes in today and he's sore or has any setbacks with our practice today, we're going to have to wait another week."

The 49ers (2-2) face the Miami Dolphins (1-3) at Levi's Stadium on Sunday.

Garoppolo sat out the previous 2 1/2 games with a high right ankle sprain, which he sustained early in the 49ers' Sept. 20 game against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. Nick Mullens made the past two starts in his absence.

After sitting out practices the next two weeks, Garoppolo returned to limited work on the 49ers' Santa Clara practice field on Wednesday and Thursday.

In six quarters of action this season, Garoppolo has been solid. He has completed 33 of 49 passes for 390 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. His passer rating is 118.6.

Shanahan has declined to reveal which quarterback -- Mullens or C.J.  Beathard -- is now No. 2 on the depth chart behind Garoppolo.

Mullens struggled Sunday night in the 49ers' 25-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and was benched in the fourth quarter. Beathard entered and rallied the 49ers late in the game.

Beathard was a third-round draft pick of the 49ers in 2017, while Mullens signed with the team after that draft as a free agent.
