Garoppolo's linebacker mentality fuels 49ers' win vs. Eagles

PHILADELPHIA -- The 49ers quarterback with the most rushing yards Sunday against the Eagles was who everyone expected it to be — Jimmy Garoppolo.

After an entire offseason of chatter about Trey Lance’s mobility, the veteran put the onus on himself to keep multiple drives alive with his legs. Garoppolo was even credited with a rushing touchdown halfway through the fourth quarter to make it a two-score game.

“I think that’s part of being a quarterback,” Garoppolo said. “You have to want that in the moment. Whenever it’s a quarterback sneak or a two-minute drive at the end of the game or a quarterback sneak, I want my number called.

“I know the guys are in it with me. In the huddle at the end of the game it was a pretty cool moment, just looking at each other in the eyes. We did it three times prior to that and when you get the opportunity to close it out, it makes for a good ride home.”

After the game, Kyle Shanahan admitted he thought about putting Trey Lance in for a few plays but as with all play calls, decided to go in another direction. Garoppolo has been incredibly successful at quarterback sneaks, and the head coach went with his gut.

“He gives me a lot of confidence in those,” Shanahan said. “He’s never been stopped on one. I think the only time he did was when he false-started. I think he was 11 for 11 before today. I’ve been around him long enough.”

While the talk outside of the building might be about the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft, the belief at 49ers headquarters is that this is Garoppolo’s team.

After a slow start, the veteran quarterback ended the day completing 22 of his 30 attempts for 189 yards, one passing touchdown and one rushing score. Garoppolo carried the ball eight times for 23 yards prior to the final three kneel downs at the end of the game.

“He’s real competitive,” Shanahan said of Garoppolo.”I mean he made a hell of a play, I want to say it was 3rd-and-2 where we didn’t get the guys open, and he ran around and ran to move the chains. I think there ended up being a penalty on them also on that play. But Jimmy is a football player.”

The 49ers head back to the Bay Area 2-0 after their 10-day road trip. The home opener with the Packers is set for Sunday night.
