PHILADELPHIA – Left tackle Joe Staley, who sustained an injury to his eye area, did not fly back to the Bay Area with his teammates Sunday evening following the 49ers’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Staley was taken to a local hospital for evaluation of an injury to his right orbital area. He remained in Philadelphia to undergo tests to diagnose the extent of his injury.
The 49ers released a statement Sunday evening through Bob Lange, the club’s vice president of communications:
“Joe Staley will remain in Philadelphia for the night as his medical evaluation will not be completed before the team flight departs. He is expected to return to the Bay Area Monday. No final diagnosis is available at this time.”
On an interception return for a touchdown, Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Fletcher Cox made a block on Staley that left him with a large gash under his right eye, which required stitches.
Staley, 33, an 11-year NFL veteran, was taken from the stadium to an area hospital before the completion of the Eagles’ 33-10 victory for further evaluation.
